About Sustain A Skin
Sustain-a-skin creates unique and original African crafts from waste materials by partnering with impoverished communities in Uganda, East Africa.
In order to build a sustainable income stream for these communities we use a broad range of waste materials including scrap paper, plastics, bottle tops, wood chippings, metallic wires, straws in addition to natural products like plant fibre, seeds, wood, tree bark and wildlife stock like animal teeth, horns hides and shells.
Our crafts include costume jewellery like bangles, earrings, necklaces, rings, brooches, anklets; decorative pieces like foot stools, desktop covers, bean bags, African taxidermy (stuffed animal skins) and other wildlife trophies-; wall hangings; and utility items like laptop covers, purses, handbags, hair combs, baskets, mats and music instruments.
Through our work we are able to provide a sustainable source of income to marginalized communities, especially women, in low-income areas who produce the crafts.
By recycling waste material Sustain-a-Skin is creating an environmentally safe space for Ugandans while improving income levels in poor communities.
