The school was started in 1968 as a joint effort between the British and Ugandan governments for the purpose of educating children of diplomats and top civil servants who were working in Uganda's capital city. Today Kitante School is a government aided co-education school that follows the national curriculum. Primary grades one and two follow a thematic curriculum but the other grades are taught a traditional core curriculum of: Mathematics, English, Science, and Social Studies. Other subjects taught are Physical Education, Music, Handwriting, Agriculture and Religious Education.. Kitante operates with an active Parent Teacher Association (PTA) and a School Management Committee (SMC) that give input into school operations. Pupils also have a say in the school and there is an active student government in which both boys are girls are elected by their peers. Kitante's school day runs from 7:30 am to 4:30 p.m. each day.
