The UOB was created in 1970 under the name of National University of Gabon (UNG). It took its current name in 1974. The UOB has long combined all of Gabonese higher education institutions. Following restructuring, some institutions have been detached to give birth to large schools (Ecole Normale Superieure of Technical Education, Graduate Institute of organizational sciences, etc.) or other universities (University of Science and Technology of Masuku University of Health Sciences in Libreville, etc.). The Omar Bongo University is a public, scientific, cultural and professional with legal personality and autonomy of financial management. It is placed under the technical supervision of the Minister of Higher Education. It has its headquarters in Libreville. However, establishments and institutes attached to it academically, and can be created in other locations by decision of the Council of Ministers.
