Njala University was established as a Public Institution in Sierra Leone, by the Universities Act of 2005 with responsibility to undertake training in Agriculture, Education, Environmental Sciences, Social Sciences, Community Health Sciences and Technology at both Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels. Njala University College (now Njala University) was established in 1964. Since then, it has served as a major centre for training middle level agricultural extension workers and teachers at secondary school level.

Established initially in September 2005 as The Fatima Institute, the college was granted university status in August 2009, and assumed the name University of Makeni, or UNIMAK. Now with more than one thousand two hundred students, the College seeks to promote the religious, political, social and economic development of the people of Africa through providing a public forum which allows the Church to make widely known, in creative dialogue, Christian convictions about man, woman, family, work, economy, society, politics, international life and the environment. It is a place of listening, respect and tolerance.

The University of Sierra Leone is the name of the former unitary Public University system in Sierra Leone, which, as of May 2005, was reconstituted into the individual colleges of Fourah Bay College - (FBC), Institute of Public Administration and Management - (IPAM) and College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences - (COMAHS). It is a National University, owned by The Government of Sierra Leone, and its Chancellor is The President of The Republic of Sierra Leone who is H.E. (Dr) Ernest Bai Koroma.
