The concept of Akwa Ibom State University started in October, 2000, when the State Government inaugurated a Committee for its establishment. The Committee which consisted of academics, technical experts and professionals submitted an interim report to the then State Governor in April 2001 and a final report in September, 2001. Following the acceptance of the report of the University Establishment Committee, the State Government set up an Implementation Committee in December 2001 to carry out the necessary basic functions including the drafting of the enabling law towards the takeoff of the university. The Bill establishing the Akwa Ibom State University of Technology (AKUTECH) was passed by the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly and signed into Law by the then Executive Governor of the State, Arc. (Obong) Victor Attah on 16th of April, 2003.

The story of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), Ondo State, Nigeria, is more appropriately told in two phases. It was first established as Obafemi Awolowo University in March 1982 by the government of the old Ondo State, headed by the late Chief Adekunle Ajasin. The immediately succeeding military government of Navy Commodore Bamidele Otiko changed its name to Ondo State University in 1985. Its relocation to Akungba-Akoko in the new Ondo State became imperative in 1999, following the creation of a new State out of the old Ondo three years earlier in October 1996. The bill backing the relocation was signed into law by the then Governor of the State, Chief Adebayo Adefarati, in November 1999, and that prompted the movement of a crop of workers from the old site in Ado-Ekiti to Akungba-Akoko on 1 December 1999.

Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), a Federal Government-licensed, Non-Profit Private University is a model which is unique in many ways. The Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo was established by the Supra Diocesan Board (West) of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), has its origins in the defunct CMS training institution, Abeokuta and the defunct St. Andrews College, Oyo. The University started as CMS Training Institution in Abeokuta in 1853 from where it was relocated to Lagos (1868 to 1896). In March 1896, it was transplanted to Oyo retrospectively in 1920. Bauchi State University was established under the Bauchi State law promulgated in 2010. The Delta State University, Abraka - popularly known as DELSU, is a State government university with a main campus located at Abraka, Delta and a campus at Anwai, Asaba. The university was established in 1981 through Law No. 4 passed by the Imo State House of Assembly, Owerri. This was amended by Edict 27 of 1985, another in 1986 and finally for the relocation by the Law No. 2 of 1992. Academic activities commenced at the temporary site located at the former Madonna High School, Ihitte, with Professor M. J. C. Echeruo as its First Vice-Chancellor. The decision to establish a State University arose when the absence of a Federal University was greatly left by the people of Imo State whose major industry is education. The State had so many qualified candidates who could not be admitted by the existing Universities. Kwara State University, also known as KWASU, is the 77th university to be registered by the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC). It is the 95th university to be recognized in Nigeria. Pan-Atlantic University is a private, non-profit educational institution in Lagos, Nigeria. The university had its origin as the Lagos Business School (LBS), established in 1991. Paul University, Awka (PUA) is located in Awka, Anambra State in Nigeria. It is a Private Christian University. It has always been the desire of the Redeemed Christian Church of God to make input into university education in Nigeria, having been convinced of the great role university education can play in the social and technological development of a nation. The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Ogun State (FUNAAB) was established on January 1, 1988 by the Federal Government when four Universities of Technology, earlier merged in 1984, were demerged. The Obafemi Awolowo University is a comprehensive public institution established in 1962 as The University of Ife. The University is situated on a vast expanse of land totaling 11,861 hectares in Ile-Ife, Osun State, southwest of Nigeria. Umaru Musa Yar’Adua University (UMYU), formerly Katsina State University was established by the Katsina State Government out of the desire to improve access to higher education for its citizenry. The law establishing the Katsina State University was passed by the Katsina State House of Assembly on 5th September 2006. The University commenced academic activities in January 2007 with three faculties(Education, Humanities & Natural and Applied Sciences), and 16 undergraduate programmes. The university will build upon existing academic strength, a total of 13 faculties, 76 departments and 236 academic programmes (undergraduate and postgraduate) at the end of its 25 year period of it’s academic phasing, which is divided into four years each.

The establishment of Universities of Agriculture came into effect on l January 1988 following a demerger process that resulted in simultaneous coming on stream of the two Universities of Agriculture located in Makurdi in Benue State, and Abeokuta in Ogun State. A third one located in Umudike in Abia State was established in 1992. The Federal Government of Nigeria had by the end of 1983 established seven new Universities of Technology, four of which were rationalized in 1984 by merging them with, and as campuses of bigger and more established Universities as a cost saving measure. Following the initiatives and reports of the National Universities Commission (NUC) on the establishment of Universities of Agriculture, the government carefully reviewed the situation against the background of the success stories of Agricultural Universities worldwide and decided to opt for converting the two campuses at Makurdi and Abeokuta into full fledged specialized Universities of Agriculture.

The University of Benin was founded in 1970. It started as an Institute of Technology and was accorded the status of a full-fledged University by National Universities Commission (NUC) on 1st July, 1971. In his Budget Speech in April 1972, the then Military Governor of Mid-Western State, Col. S. O. Ogbemudia (then also Visitor to the University) formally announced the change of the name of the Institute of Technology to the University of Benin. University of Calabar grew out of the Calabar campus of University of Nigeria (UNN), Nigeria which began functioning during the 1973 academic session with 154 students and a small cadre of academic, administration and professional staff. In April 1975, the Federal Military Government of Nigeria announced that as part of the National Development Plan, seven new Universities were to be established at various locations in the country. The University of Calabar was one of the seven Universities set up under this programme.

Established some 67 years ago, the University of Ibadan, UI as it is fondly referred to, is the first University in Nigeria. Until 1962 when it became a full fledged independent University, it was a College of the University of London in a special relationship scheme. The University of Jos started as a Campus of the University of Ibadan in November, 1971, with the appointment of Professor E. A. Ayandele as its first Acting Principlal. Its first home was the present Township campus of the University which is located along Murtala Mohammed way, Jos. Its first students admitted in January, 1972 were pre-degree students. Degree courses in Arts were introduced in October 1973 and in Science and Education the following year. The same year, the Bauchi Road Campus which then accommodated only the Faculties of Natural, environmental, Medical Sciences and Education was acquired.

The establishment of the University of Lagos in 1962 was informed by the need to intensify the training of a professional workforce for a newly independent Nigeria in search of rapid industrialisation and economic development. It was however quite evident that the country lacked the requisite workforce to actualise the people’s dream. There was a big gulf to be filled, and that required establishing many more universities.

The University of Mkar was licensed by the Federal Government of Nigeria in June, 2005 to operate as a private University in Nigeria, providing education to all Nigerians and beyond without discrimination to race, tribe, political or religious affiliation. It however, took-off on 4th October, 2005. The University is owned by the NKST Church, an offshoot of the Dutch Reformed Church/Sudan United Mission of South Africa and North America respectively. The Dutch Reformed Missionaries of South Africa came to Tivland in 1911 to evangelize, establishing many churches and schools. Later, they transferred the work to their partners, the Sudan United Mission (SUM) of North America who eventually handed the work over to the indigenes under the name “Nongu u Kristu u Sudan hen Tiv” (NKST) or the Church of Sudan among the Tiv.

The University of Nigeria (UNN), commonly referred to as UNN, is a federal university located in Nsukka, Enugu State, Nigeria. Founded in 1955 and formally opened on 7 October 1960, the University of Nigeria has four campuses – Nsukka, Enugu and Ituku-Ozalla – located in Enugu State and one in Aba, Abia State, Nigeria. The University of Nigeria(UNN) was the first full-fledged indigenous and first autonomous university in Nigeria, modelled upon the American educational system. It is the first land-grant university in Africa and one of the five elite universities in the country. The university has 15 Faculties and 102 academic departments. The University offers 82 undergraduate programs and 211 postgraduate programmes.[4]

The Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (formerly University of Sokoto) is one of the four Universities established by the Federal Government of Nigeria in September 1975 , at which time three University Colleges (now full-fledged Universities) were established. The development of the university started on a temporary site (now called City Campus), situated along Sultan Abubakar Road, Sokoto. classes started in October 20th, 1977, with an initial enrolment of ninety-three undergraduate students for the degrees of Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Arts/Science in Education and Bachelor of Science; and an academic staff strength of thirty-three.

VERITAS University, Abuja (VUNA), is the Catholic University of Nigeria. It was founded by the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria through a resolution given at its March 2002 meeting in Abuja. The initiative came from the Bishops’ quest for a University that would provide high quality tertiary education according to the noble tradition of the Catholic Church. The University emphasizes strong moral values, self-reliance and the development of the students’ entrepreneurial capabilities for the social and economic benefit of the graduates and the Nigerian society. This is an appropriate response to Pope John Paul II’s call for Catholic Universities to be instruments for the educational advancement of the people of God expressed in his Encyclical Letter, Ex Corde Ecclesiae No. 30.

By 1995, the modest foundation of 1983 had brought Management Science Centre into joint relationships with several institutions of higher learning in Nigeria, among which are the Auchi Polytechnic, Auchi, Edo State; University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Oyo State and Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State. Our achievements in the programmes undertaken gave rise to a desire for expansion in order to contribute optimally to the development of education in Nigeria. The result was the establishment of Wisdom Gate High School in 2001 and Wellspring College in 2003, both secondary schools of international standard that placed great emphasis on moral upbringing. Then in 2006, the Centre established the Cornerstone College of Education in Lagos. The motive of serving as a Centre of learning where Nigerian children, who are hungry for university education that is based on sound moral and spiritual principles, can accomplish their ambitions has always been the core of our vision. Yobe State University Damaturu The noble idea to establish a State University in Yobe State was first muted by the administration of Alh. Bukar Abba Ibrahim, the then Executive Governor of Yobe State. The Government clearly expressed her determination to provide sound and qualitative education in the state.
