The origin of older universities in the developed world can be traced in Europe to as far back as twelfth century. Most of them developed from cathedral and monastery schools and other centres of learning under the guidance of academic leaders whose fame spread far beyond their immediate environment, enabling them to attract scholars and students from far and near. Their rates of development varied and it is sometime difficult to know when they actually became full fledged universities. The University of Bologna is believed to be the oldest having been founded in the early twelfth century even though it existed as a law school since the ninth century. The University of Paris with a slight different structure from that of Bologna developed in the late twelfth century. These schools and centres, which where founded mainly to serve the professions, provided unified teaching of law, medicine and theology providing Ministers of Religion and other statesmen and professionals. There is a dearth of instructions and infrastructure to cater for the needs of our ever increasing number of secondary school leavers. This has made it imperative for the private sector to take initiatives in the areas of providing tertiary education, especially for an organization that has a track record in providing high quality education. It has always been the desire of the Redeemed Christian Church of God to make input into university education in Nigeria, having been convinced of the great role university education can play in the social and technological development of a nation. This dream could not come true because of the existence of Decree No. 19 of 1984, which proscribed and banned the establishment and operation of private universities. The opportunity was however made available by the Federal Government, when Decree No. 9 of 1993 was promulgated allowing private individuals or organizations to establish universities in Nigeria, provided they meet certain criteria laid down by the Federal Government through the National Universities Commission. In order to realize its dream, the Redeemed Christian Church of God, the Proprietors of the University, initially acquired a large expanse of land in Ede Local Government Area of Osun State, having obtained the Certificate of Statutory Right of Occupancy in 1997.

The Renaissance University is an idea and an ideal whose time has finally come. We are all conversant with what had happened to the Nigerian educational system out of which the University education has suffered innumerable punches from cheating at the UME and racket admission, lack of facilities, constant strikes by staff and students, secrets cultism, examination malpractice, bizarre academic calendar etc. The result of these punches is a University system that has been technically knocked out (TKO). The three conventional University competencies of Teaching, Research and Community Service have been completely compromised because none of the three is receiving the attention it deserves. The promoters of Renaissance thus conceived of a University that will bring a complete rebirth to the University education system in Nigeria.

The SouthWestern University, Nigeria, is an academic community dedicated to the ideals of justice. A university is above all a place where intellectual life is central and where faculty, staff, and students strive together for excellence in the pursuit of knowledge. It is a particular kind of community with special purposes. Moreover, this academic community, if it is to support our broader ideals, must also be just. There is no definite theory of justice. The differences in these theories of justice are to be respected. However, among all democratic theories of justice, the principles of equality and liberty are basic. These principles are no less central for a free university. In a just community, the dignity of the individual and respect for diversity are fundamental. Members of a just community are committed to raising awareness of common ground and to the principles of respect, integrity, innovation, openness, justice and responsibility.
