Akiyda 2000 Ltd deals with the manufacturing and distribution of baked products under the Akyida Brand.

This brand was developed in 2000 as a complimentary product to the household brand Supa Loaf. Akyida bread is popular for its irresistible taste; its freshness, quality, compactness and consistency.

The bread is produced and packaged in five different sizes and weights. These range from 200g to 1.5kg and are offered as both white and brown bread to suit consumer preferences and affordability.

The distribution system is facilitated by a fleet of vehicles to cover Kenya and Tanzania.

I come from a small community on the coast of Kenya where cooking and baking is a huge part of life. When I moved to Nairobi, I couldn’t find a cake that seemed fresh and homemade, so I decided to turn my passion for baking into a business.

The term ‘brown bread’ is usually taken to mean bread made of whole wheat grains. In other words, in the process of making brown bread, the bran and germ of the wheat flour are not removed and left intact. The result is that the bread retains all its essential nutrients, along with the much healthy fiber. However, while buying brown bread, in the exact sense, you should not only look at its color, but also at the ingredients in it. This is because, in many cases, the bread is made to look brown by adding things like caramel, but in essence, it is not made from whole wheat and does not contain all the nutrients. So, before buying brown bread, make sure to check that it has whole wheat flour as the main ingredient.

Armed with little resources and a big dream, the founder, Chief Chef Mathew Gathua in 1997, set up the very first Valentine Cake House outlet in Mombasa. Myriad teething problems led to the closure of the outlet and relocation to Nairobi. Mathew had then quit his job to focus on baking. Low on revenue, but his vision still burning, Mathew rejoined hotel industry raised capital that led to the opening of the first Nairobi branch in Rongai in 2001.
