The Ghana Health Service (GHS) is a Public Service body established under Act 525 of 1996 as required by the 1992 constitution. It is an autonomous Executive Agency responsible for implementation of national policies under the control of the Minister for Health through its governing Council - the Ghana Health Service Council. The GHS continue to receive public funds and thus remain within the public sector. However, its employees will no longer be part of the civil service, and GHS managers will no longer be required to follow all civil service rules and procedures. The independence of the GHS is designed primarily to ensure that staffs have a greater degree of managerial flexibility to carry out their responsibilities, than would be possible if they remained wholly within the civil service. Ghana Health Service does not include Teaching Hospitals, Private and Mission Hospitals

THE VETERINARY SERVICES AND VETERINARY COUNCIL OF GHANA The first Veterinary Surgeon credited with establishing the present day Veterinary Services Directorate (Captain W.P. Beal) arrived in the Gold Coast in May 1909 at the request of the Colonial Government. The Department was at that time, placed under the jurisdiction of the Department of Health until 1920 when it was separated from the Department of Health to form a separate Department. Since then, the Veterinary Services Directorate (VSD) has undergone a lot of metamorphosis culminating as a fully-fledged separate Directorate under the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA). With the gradual increase in livestock and poultry production in the 1980s and early 1990s coupled with the need for improved Public Health support to the overall populace of Ghana, the Veterinary Surgeons’ Law was promulgated on 30th December 1992 as PNDC Law 305C with the primary aim of regulating and coordinating the practice of Veterinary Medicine in t

The name of the Council changed from Nurses and Midwives Council of Ghana as provided for in the NRCD 117 of 1972 and LI 683 of 1971 during the year 2013 to Nursing and Midwifery Council following the enactment of the Health Professions Regulatory Bodies Act, 2013 (Act 857). Part Three of the Health Professions Regulatory Bodies Act, 2013 (ACT 857) mandates the Council to secure in the public interest the highest standards of training and practice of nursing and midwifery.
