The Financial Intelligence Unit (“FIU” or “the Unit”) is a government organ which was established under statute and powers indicated in the Money Laundering, Proceeds of Serious Crimes and Terrorist Financing Act, Number 11 of 2006. The Act was assented by the President on 24th August, 2006 and the FIU was established and became operational in July 2007. The FIU is an autonomous central national body reporting directly to the Minister of Finance.

The Malawi Microfinance Network (MAMN) is a legally constituted grouping of micro-finance institutions and institutions that are providing microfinance related services in Malawi. In September 1997, a national Forum on Microfinance was held in Mangochi and that Forum identified a number of factors that posed serious constraints to the development of the Microfinance Industry in Malawi.

The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) is an agency of the Government of Malawi responsible for assessment, collection and accounting for tax revenues. MRA was established by an Act of Parliament in 1998 and was launched in February 2000. It was formed to improve on the functions previously carried out by Divisions of Customs and Excise, and Income Tax in the Ministry of Finance. The Authority operates as a government tax administration agency under the Ministry of Finance.The revenue that the Authority collects goes to Government for implementation of various socioeconomic development projects such as the constructions of roads, bridges, schools health facilities and provision of social services. These include national security, provision of salaries for civil servants such as the police, the army, judges, doctors, nurses and teachers.

The National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) was established by Act of Parliament No. 15 of 2011, with the primary purpose of providing accreditation and quality assurance services in higher education institutions. Specifically, the NCHE aims to promote and coordinate education provided by higher education institutions, design quality assurance systems and determine, maintain and regulate standards for teaching, examinations, qualifications and facilities; register, de-register and accredit higher education institutions; determine framework for funding higher education and provide guidance on terms and conditions for awarding students’ grants, loans and scholarships; and harmonize student selection into public higher education institutions.

The Staff Development Institute (SDI) is a local training, consulting and research government institution based at Mpemba, in Blantyre, Malawi. Established in 1962 as a civil service training institution, SDI forms the training arm of the Malawi Civil Service. SDI is administratively placed under the Department of Human Resource Management and Development in the Office of the President and Cabinet. Over the years, it has evolved from being a purely civil servants' training institution to one that caters for both public and private sector organizations. Although it is a Government Institution, it has general autonomy over its day to day operations.
