That convocation of writers debated the desirability of having a writers association in the country. Spurred by the moving speech of the convener and the wisdom of having an association of refined minds, the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) was born. The Nsukka conference, attended by two Kenyan writers, Ngugi wa Thiong’o and Gacheche Wauringi, therefore entered history as the first convention of ANA. For the over 30 years since its formation, ANA has been in the forefront of the promotion of Nigerian Literature and the interest of Nigerian writers. Nigerian writers, united under the banner of ANA, have gone through challenging travails and have equally recorded remarkable achievements.
