About National Organisation of Trade Unions(NOTU)

The National Organisation of Trade Unions (NOTU) was established by Decree No. 29 of 1973. It is the most representative Labour Centre in Uganda with Twenty labour union affiliates. NOTU is a non-profit labour organization that represents millions of Ugandan workers. We work with labour unions and community groups in all districts of Uganda.

Aims and objectives of NOTU

  • To promote and safeguard the interest of all registered labour unions affiliated to it and the welfare of workers in Uganda.
  • To assist such labour unions to find practical solutions to problems of organization and administration.
  • To settle disputes concerning representation and demarcation matters.
  • To encourage the development of strong, unified and viable unions in Uganda and to establish sound industrial relations.
  • To give legal advice and assistance to its affiliates.
  • To promote social and economic benefits to its members.
  • To operate and promote, aid and encourage the establishment of cooperatives and other economic institutions owned wholly or partly by workers, affiliated unions or NOTU on their behalf.
  • To secure adequate representation on Government and Industrial bodies, committees or any other such bodies that deal with labour legislation or any other matters affecting labour

 

Functions of NOTU 

The purposes for which NOTU was established are:

  • To formulate policies relating to the proper management of labour unions and the general welfare of employees.
  • To coordinate and supervise the activities of labour unions in order to ensure that undertakings entered into by individual unions or by NOTU on behalf of its affiliated unions are duly honoured.
  • To plan for and in collaboration with other interested bodies or persons, administer workers′ education programme.
  • To serve as a link between registered labour unions on the one hand, government and other local and international partners on the other, regarding all matters of mutaual interest.
  • To serve general as a consultant on all matters relating to labour union affairs.
