About Uganda Cooperative Transport Union(UCTU)

In 1973, the Uganda Co-operative Transport Union was formed, following the exodus of the Asian community. Starting with just seven trucks, the UCTU transported crops from district co - operatives to marketing boards, processing centres and ports for export.

The liberalisation of the Ugandan economy saw UCTU's market share fall from 60 percent to just ten percent. The much-talked about revival of the co-operatives by government could hugely boost UCTU's business.

But now, the UCTU boasts of 53 trucks. On top of that, they manage 43 trucks and 15 trailers for the World Food Programme (WFP), a major customer. UCTU now operates in Rwanda, Burundi, DRC, Tanzania and Kenya. UCTU is owned by 38 members, and has 140 workers, of whom 80 are drivers.

We as UCTU after the collapse of Co-operatives remained with only WFP as our major customer/client but this did give us courage to work hard. We have managed to move on.

Our customers also include government, UPDF, Kampala City Council, National Agricultural Organisation, Uganda Wildlife Authority, Uganda Revenue Authority.
