About The Kenya Institute of Planners (KIP)

The Kenya Institute of Planners (KIP) is the premiere umbrella body representing professional planners in Kenya. The Institute brings together Urban and Regional Planners, Economic Development Planners, Transportation and Infrastructure Planners, Social and Community Planners, Environmental Planners, and Urban Designers in Kenya.

KIP was formed pursuant of Section 12 (b) of the Physical Planners Registration Act (PPRA), which had anticipated the formation and approval of a professional institute for planners. Hitherto, planners were represented through the Town Planning Chapter of the Architectural Association of Kenya. KIP was subsequently registered on the 21st April 1999 under the Societies Act following a long period of consultation among planners and other stakeholders affected by the planning practice in Kenya. Consequently, KIP has obtained recognition and status, as the officially recognized body mandated to speak on behalf of the planning fraternity in Kenya, from regional and international bodies such as the Association of Professional Societies of East Africa (APSEA), the Commonwealth Association of Planners (CAP) and the International Society of City and Regional Planners (ISOCARP), all to which it subscribes as an institutional member on a yearly basis.

The Institutes main Purpose is to promote the growth of the planning profession in Kenya. Our objects include; bringing together, representing, promoting the welfare and professional development and education, and maintaining oversight over the practice and conduct of members of the legitimate profession of planning, and by so doing safeguarding the public interest.
