IOGA’s inception 45 years from now coincided with the early years of political freedom which were incidentally fraught with high economic uncertainty. At the aegis of this new entity were Mssrs Sam Modeliar Cunden and Regis Sum Yuen, who despite their inexperience in the insurance field, had the business acumen and will to foray into this industry. IOGA is effectively an important player and played an important stake in the democratisation of the Mauritian insurance industry. Helped in their quest for success by important traders and planters, this duo of entrepreneurs was able to strengthen their presence in the financial services sector by setting up the first fully owned Mauritian Bank, the Indian Ocean International Bank (IOIB Ltd).
