Product Information

UPF Nnalongo is a Ugandan passion fruit variety that produces multiple fruits from a single fruit stalk.

Background.
Nnalongo, in Uganda, is a woman who produces   more than one baby at ago. Because this variety shares the same attributes, and was developed in Uganda, we looked around for a name that would best describe what it does and at the same time  reflect Uganda.

We developed it locally, using a local but efficient technology from our local (commonly known as UPF12/Masaka) variety. For that matter, by physical characteristics, its masaka save for the yield.

What inspired us!
Because of the ever increasing demand for the fruit locally and abroad and because only a handful of farmers in Uganda at the time were involved in the trade, and even those few involved, the yields were low due unpredictable weather and high cost of production, we kept thinking: What can one do to use less and earn more?! How can a youth, who has just come out of school with limited resources, an urban dweller with little land earn from this high end crop that is much sought after!

We wanted a product which the farmer could grow with the sameness of UPF12 in methodology but with a difference in output. In 2016, we got down to work. Almost naturally, we were faced with multiple failures here and there, uncertain that we would make it but we didn’t give up and eventually, bit by bit, by the end of the year, we perfected UPF Nnalongo.

Productivity vis-a-vis Investment.
Passion fruits are perennial crops which require continuous managementtherefore, investing in them is not a one-off. Its a continuous exercise which is done at every stage of growth.

The best way to determine the capital input required is to look at what one may need to invest from the time of planting to harvesting; for during harvesting, passion fruits can ably sustain themselves as well as give the farmer adequate profits.

Basing our estimates on 1 acre in 8-10 months.

The above estimates include labour, but if family labour is at one’s disposal, it could slightly bring the cost down.
